2014 Paula Major Lectureship Award
Elaine M. Zapata, MSN, ARNP, AOCNP
Congratulations to Elaine Zapata, the 2014 winner of the Paula Major Lectureship Award. Ms. Zapata has 14 years of experience working with oncology patients and has the requisite clinical expertise to review issues related to gynecologic malignancies. Prior to joining her current practice setting at Gainesville GYN Oncology, she was a member of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the UF Health (formerly Shands Hospital). She provided care for hematology and oncology patients at Florida Cancer Specialists. She has earned credentials as an Advanced Certified Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONCC) and is an active member of the following organizations: American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, Florida Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Society of Nursing, the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists, and the Oncology Nursing Society. She is currently a first-year student in the PhD program at the University of Florida College of Nursing where her research interests center on quality of life issues faced by cancer patients and in particular, ovarian cancer patients.
Ms. Zapata’s podium presentation at the 31st Annual SGNO Symposium in San Diego, California, was titled “Quality of Life for Newly Diagnosed Ovarian Cancer Patients: Current Knowledge, Future Directions, and Implications for Practice.”
The Paula Major Lectureship Award was established to honor one of SGNO’s founding members, Paula Major. Each year, the Paula Major Lectureship Award is given to a gynecology-oncology nurse submitting an abstract for a podium presentation about a diagnosis or clinical issue affecting gynecology-oncology patients. The recipient of this prestigious award receives free registration for that year’s symposium and a $500 honorarium.
