Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Quilt Project
We encourage gynecologic oncology nurses across the country to contribute a block to this quilt. It will be used by members of the SGNO who may be making a presentation regarding gynecologic cancer to enhance their talk. It can be displayed at cancer awareness events, at women's wellness events, or during cancer awareness month. It will also be displayed at the annual SGNO symposium. Any design is welcome. Blocks may be contributed by individuals, groups of gynecologic oncology nurses, nursing divisions where gynecologic oncology patients are cared for, or any other such gynecologic oncology nursing group. The guidelines for individual blocks, as listed below, need to be observed so the blocks will fit together to form a quilt. You may want to be part of the quilt but don't feel you can make a block. The outer border of the quilt will consist of appliqued "helping hands". We would like for your hand to be one of these hands. Please see the directions below to contribute in this manner. If you traced your hand at the 2000 SGNO Symposium and would like to provide fabric for your hand, please use the guidelines below to aid in making that choice of fabric. Guidelines for a Block
Use cotton fabrics to create a 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 inch block. Pre wash your fabrics. Create your block to honor a loved patient, to acknowledge your caring group of gynecologic oncology nurses (pieced appliqued, embroidered, cross stitched). Write a short note about yourself and who your block celebrates and how they have affected your life (lives). This information will also travel with the quilt and may be part of a presentation about the quilt.
Remember, the quilt will be traveling around and will need periodic washing. No puff pens. Appliques should be securely sewn down. Please use Pellon Wonder-Under if you fuse your applique before sewing it down. Guidelines for Helping Hands Select a piece of fabric which represents your gynecologic experience. At a fabric store, purchase a piece of Pellon Wonder-Under slightly larger than your hand. Trace your hand (one hand per nurse) on the paper side of the Wonder-Under. Iron the Wonder-Under to the wrong side of the fabric following directions on the Wonder-Under. Leave the paper sandwich intact and send to Judy Parham. Please send all blocks and helping hands to: Judy Parham 38 Hill Drive Kirkwood, MO 631222
