Founding of the SGNO
The SGNO traces its roots to individuals who were willing to take the initiative and exercise their professional leadership on behalf of advancement in women's health care. In 1979, with the support of Richard Boronow, MD; dedicated nurses established the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists. In the winter of 1980, ten nurses from around the U.S. and Canada met in Scottsdale, AZ. At this historic meeting, goals for the formation of a gynecologic oncology nursing society were made. These ten nurses became the founding council of the SGNO:
Cynthia Beebe
Terry Chamorro
Lynda Ronan-Conan
Mary Lou Cullen
Terre Currie
Diana Hoff
Judith Hubbard
Sharon Kelly
Paula Major
Helen Petersen
In July, 1983, the first SGNO educational conference was held in Denver, CO. In attendance were 75 nurses from all over the US and Canada. Each year since 1983, the SGNO has presented an educational symposium that concentrates on the care of women with gynecologic cancer and women's health.
